Rory McIlroy found himself in the news during the week of the John Deere Classic. And no, he wasn’t competing in the charity pro-am or offering the city of Silvis, IL an autograph session at a local bookstore.

In fact, he was 3,700 miles away from the PGA Tour’s event when this social media post hit the wires…

Can you hear the air deflating from the golf world’s balloon? Driving Series The injury comes at perhaps the worst time possible– only one week before The Open Championship, at the home of golf, St. Andrews. Last time we were at the home of golf in 2010, Louis Oosthuizen ran away and hid with a driving display for the ages, but remember, it was Rory McIlroy we were waking up to at 4AM to see at 9-under par, 63. He followed with an 80 before a weekend 68-69 launched him back into a T3. I’m sure he was eager for a chance to avenge the 80 and defend his title, but it doesn’t seem like a reality. This injury isn’t the type you can splint and still play. It requires time, healing and rehab. Take note of Richie Ramsey’s comments about the matter when he took to Twitter with a response:

It doesn’t look like Rory will be playing, folks. The last time we heard of Rory breaking something, it was his engagement with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki in an effort to improve his golf game. I can’t imagine this breaking (I’m sorry for the bad pun…) news is going to play into a better golf game. And only a few weeks ago, he had posted this video as well. I wonder who he selected to meet him. Will he still be there?

We were just starting to get the rivalry we wanted, Rory McIlroy vs. Jordan Spieth. Europe’s hero and world #1 against the incumbent American star with enough confidence to conquer the world. The last 4 major winners would meet at St. Andrews in Fife, Scotland.

But we must wait.

We must wait for an answer on the world number one’s ankle. We must wait for the re-kindling of golf’s next rivalry. We must wait to see Rory McIlroy play an Open Championship again, particularily one at St. Andrews. We must wait for his return to the game of golf.

We just don’t know how long…
