How to Chip from Deep Rough with Consistency

05/14/2017 Sometimes when you’re just off the green you can still use your putter or even hit a 7-iron bump-and-run.  However, there will be times when your ball nestles down into a 5-inch clump of rough and the only way to get it on the green and anywhere near the flag is by chipping it. How do you chip from the high rough?  PGA teaching pro Todd Kolb of USGolfTV.com has a new video on YouTube that gives a nice demonstration of the technique required. “When your ball comes to rest in that really deep, thick grass there are...

Who is “Golf Best Without a Major” Now?

04/16/2017 Now that Sergio has won the Masters, who has taken over his long-held unofficial title as the “Best Player Without a Major”? The question is somewhat complicated by the fact that in the last 15 years—covering 61 majors—there have been 39 separate winners of the four events. This, with at least 30 of those players notching their first “big win” during that time. Of those 39 pros, 27 have won only one major title. So the list of players who have won one of golf’s big 4 has grown significantly since 2002, a year when Tiger Woods won...

A Popular Myth Proved False: Why is a Round of Golf 18 Holes?

4/14/2017 The history of golf in Scotland didn’t start the way we see it today. Some of the initial homes to the game include Blackheath, Leith Links and Bruntsfield Links at only 5 holes. More courses like Musselburgh Old Course at 7 holes, only added an 8th hole in the 1830s and a 9th hole in 1870. Even venerable Prestwick opened in 1851 with only 12 holes. So how did we come to have common agreement today that golf courses are either 9 or 18 holes and that a full round of golf includes putts holed 18 times? The truth probably...

2017 Silver Cup: Who Will Be Low Amateur at the 2017 Masters?

04/04/2017 Bryson DeChambeau will not repeat this year as the winner of the Silver Cup at the Masters. This year there are five contenders for the Silver Cup. Read Kyle Porter’s Rankings of the 5 Amateurs Curtis Luck The clear favorite has to be US Amateur champion Curtis Luck. As the reigning US Am champ and the world’s number one ranked amateur, Luck will tee it up Thursday and Friday with...

Gary Player’s Workout Regiment STRONG at Age 80

03/28/2017 Back in the late 1970s when Gary Player was still winning majors, if you didn’t recognize a pro golfer’s face, it was often difficult to tell him from the fans around him. The golfers were mostly average-sized. And few worked on building their bodies. They looked like regular Joes and if you saw them away from the golf course you probably wouldn’t guess they were professional athletes. Yet players like Ben Crenshaw, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros, Jerry Pate, John Mahaffey, Hubert Green, Tom Kite, Player and many others were Tour winners despite not being either tall or overly...

Jack Nicklaus Academies of Golf Extend into 10 Countries Worldwide

03/18/2017 We all know great golfers aren’t born, they’re created through practice. However, if the fundamentals are not properly taught and thoroughly ingrained, then no amount of practice will turn a bad player into a good one. Or, as Jack Nicklaus, the game’s all-time Majors winner, once said: “If you want to enjoy the game of golf more, it’s very simple: Learn to play better.” That’s part of the guiding philosophy that drives the Nicklaus Academies. They’re now operating in ten countries , with the most recent opening of the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf at Hawk’s Landing Golf Club in...

4 Wonderful Lessons for Playing Golf in the Wind

03/08/2017 Playing in a strong wind is a fact of life for most golfers who hit the links in the sometimes iffy-weather of spring. Once those wind gusts get above 15- to 20-miles per hour, they’re strong enough to have a noticeable effect on a ball in flight. So what to do? If you don’t have a lot of experience playing on “Windsday,” or you want a refresher on some of the finer points of hitting irons into the green on a windy day, take a look at these videos you can find on YouTube.   1. Phil Mickelson Talks...

NEW 2017 Titleist ProV1 and ProV1x Golf Balls

02/23/2017 There are more differences between the new 2017 Titleist Pro V1 and the Pro V1x than a black number or a red number on the ball’s cover, but choosing which one is best for you will take a little analysis of your usual ball flight and short game style. The new Pro V1s (the black numbered balls) have 352 dimples arrayed in a tetrahedral pattern that fully covers the ball. The new Pro V1x (red numbers) have 324 dimples that cover more of the ball’s surface than previous generations of the X. The differences continue beneath the balls’...

Parsons Xtreme Golf [PXG] Raises Their Ante, Expensive Getting More Expensive

02/19/2017 Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe gave a Honma gold driver valued at $4,000 to President Trump when they golfed together at Mar-a-Lago recently. Supposedly, a full set of those clubs cost around $32,000. Then again, Bob Parsons, the founder of GoDaddy.com, told the Arizona Republic newspaper that he figured out he spent nearly $350,000 on his own golf equipment in 2014. And that’s why, I suppose, he launched Parsons Xtreme Golf (PXG) in 2015. Since then, Parsons Xtreme Golf has become a major player in the high-stakes, high-end game of limited-edition, top-of-the-line golf equipment where a full set...
