Golf on YouTube: How You Can Improve with YouTube Golf Instruction

11/09/2016 It turns out there are some 25 times more free golf instruction videos available online than there are golf instructors in the world. Fact: a YouTube search for golf instruction videos reveals “about” 650,000 hits, while the World Golf Teachers Federation boasts 25,000 members worldwide. No one has watched all of those videos (it would take over 4 years, 24 hours a day) and there might be some in there that give bad advice or aren’t really that instructional. For example, on the second page of my search results there’s a video from RealGolfTalk, titled “Golf Lesson Gets...

The Haney Power Quiz: Step-by-Step Through the Questionnaire

11/07/2016 I was asked to take the Hank Haney Power Quiz at www.haneypowerquiz.com.  It turns out that that URL is the entry portal for Haney University, or I should say, for the landing page at membership.haneyuniversity.com. The quiz is a little like the “sorting hat” of online golf instruction: it tells students what Haney class they should be enrolled in.  With six simple questions, the quiz narrows down the most urgent area where golf improvement is required. Step 1: The computer test starts by asking what range my handicap is in. I check the 11 – 15 box because,...

Cody Gribble, A Winner on Tour with a Bright Future

11/05/2016 Cody Gribble has a name right out of a Dan Jenkins golf novel. Think Grover Scomer, Bobby Joe Grooves, or Knut Thorssun. Then again, truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and maybe not even Jenkins would approve of one of his characters tasting success so quickly on the PGA Tour. That’s because Gribble, a 26-year old rookie, won in only his second start as a tour member taking a four stroke victory in the Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi in late October. Gribble’s remarkable win may sound like an overnight success story, but the reality shows it...

4 Key, Putt-Draining Factors to Consider When Choosing a Putter

4 Factors in Choosing a Putter 10/27/2016 Some guys I know have used the same putter for 10 years or more, but there are a couple of members of our Saturday touring group who seem to show up with a different putter every month. One week a guy will be on the practice green with a new flat stick that has a grip as wide as a beer can, the next time I see him his putter has an aiming line of four golf balls stacked behind the sweet spot. I have the same putter each week because I’m...

Discovering the 2017 Antigua Golf Line

10/22/2016 When I was asked to write a few hundred words about Antigua Golf, I immediately went to the Internet to see what courses were like on the West Indies island that’s part of the country of Antigua and Barbuda. It turns out there are two golf courses on that beautiful Caribbean isle located southeast of the Virgin Islands, the Cedar Valley Golf Club and the wonderfully named Jolly Harbour Beach Resort and Marina Golf Club. (By the way, Cedar Valley can be seen here.) Then I reread the assignment and discovered that Antigua Golf is not a resort...

A Look Ahead to the Final 30 at the Tour Championship: FedEx Cup time!

09/16/2016 The field will be smaller than your typical men’s club Saturday morning tournament, but the richest prize of the year will be on the line when the final 30 qualifiers vie for the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup at East Lake in Atlanta starting Thursday. In a limited field event like this, anyone can win. The top-5 all control their own destiny; win the tournament, win the 10th annual FedEx Cup. Theoretically, any of the 30 finalists could capture the season-long points race and the $10 million prize that goes with it. For golfers ranked out of...

Slope and Course Rating: How They’re Defined, “These Important Numbers”

09/09/2016 There are some numbers on your scorecard that are almost as important as the scores you write down for each hole: slope and course rating. To some golfers, checking the slope and course rating before teeing off is part of their normal pre-round routine – other golfers never look at them and wonder what the numbers mean, how they’re figured and why they’re important. Here are the answers to those questions. Course ratings have been around since the Ladies Golf Union began the practice in 1893 in Great Britain. By 1911, the USGA was rating courses in the...

The PNP Rake Lob Wedge: It Can Help You Escape the Rough

08/31/2016 If the golf course you play has heavy, gnarly rough around the greens, then you might benefit from watching a video from PGA teaching professional Todd Kolb, lead teaching professional for USGolfTV, on how to hit a chip shot out of deep rough using a lob wedge. How to Fix the Over the Top Move

08/16/2016 If the ball flight you always hope for is a high draw, but the reality off the tee is usually something else, you might be coming over-the-top on your swing. The good news is that with a little work and a little instruction, you can fix that problem. Here’s a video to help: PGA teaching professional Todd Kolb, a contributor to USGolftv.com, has a segment of “On the Lesson Tee” available on YouTube that addresses that very problem. “One of the more common things we as golf instructors see,” Kolb says in the 110 second video, “that’s the...
