The first day at the SDGA Two Man has been completed and to the surprise of, well, no one, phenomenal scores were posted on the leaderboard. First, USGolfTV’s own Joel Harrington, paired with partner Troy Giegling fired a morning 65. They were tied by Mitchell’s Brandon Sigmund and Jeff Meyerink, who also fired a 65. Behind them were a pair of 66’s with the teams of Eric Hieb/Jonathan Emerson and Charlie Jacobson/Danny Amundson. Three shots back at 68 sit the Kyle Cooper/Levi Smith and Jeff Salter/Jon Lesselyoung. Due to the hot and windy conditions and course set up, every single team within 3 shots at the top of the leaderboard came in the morning wave of groups.
Hillcrest Country Club presented the golfers with quick, small greens and a lot of tree trouble (…to be expected). Add that to some 20-25 MPH winds with gusts sometimes higher, the players in Yankton were not given an easy test of golf. Hillcrest does not set up long for many, as it is slightly longer than 6700 yards, but it provided a fair test for many of the competitors at today’s event. Playing shorter irons and many wedges into small, crowned greens with speed is not something normally considered easy by many players, no matter if they are the state’s best. This is also true with some pins sitting only a few paces off the front and side edges of greens. Despite this, the Giegling/Harrington groups and Sigmund/Meyerink groups were not fazed. Low scores were still had at the HCC.
Chad Dubisar of Sioux Falls made a hole in one on the 182 yard par 3 16th! He and partner Brett Coluccio of Sioux Falls sit with a group of teams at 69, 4 shots off the pace.
Tomorrow’s rounds will commence at the same time again tomorrow, with the leading groups not teeing off until the early afternoon. The final grouping of Harrington/Giegling and Meyerink/Sigmund will tee off number 1 at 1:50PM. Click here for the full list of 1st round results and 2nd round tee times.
It will be another exciting SDGA Sunday!
