The Stroke Play format is the most common form of golf played. It is the type of golf seen in tournaments on all levels, including many of the big tournaments viewers may see on TV.

This format, shown to viewers by PGA Professional Todd Kolb, is where the score is the total number of strokes taken on all holes. Every stroke is counted until the ball is holed out on each and every hole played.

Each hole’s score is written on a scorecard and is added up once the round is concluded. The total score is also known as the gross score.
