Minnesota has a rich history of hosting major golf events, the 1993 Walker Cup, 1916/1930/1970/1991 US Open, the 2009 PGA, and even the 2016 Ryder Cup, But how about something for the aspiring tour professional?

Now, Minnesota can also proudly claim the new North Star Professional Golf Tour. The North Star PGT is a new mini-tour beginning in 2015 with the inaugural North Star Open, a 36 hole event played at Dellwood CC on July 6th and 7th.

Offering one of the larger purses ($50,000) and first prizes ($20,000) in the upper Midwest. The tour will expand to five events in 2016–and hopefully more in the future beyond 2016!

Developed by a group of proud Minnesotans, the tour was created to give professionals from MN and the upper Midwest an opportunity to compete at a high level for large purses without significant travel. They plan on keeping the events located in Minnesota and surrounding states with close proximity. The first few years will be focused on the Twin Cities area, however they have hopes of expanding throughout the state.

The North Star events will also be open to high end amateurs who want to test their games against the pros. The protect the sanctity of the amateur game, amateurs will compete for shop credit and merchandise against the professionals. Similar to other quality mini-tours, the NSPGT will hopefully provide a springboard for young professionals to bigger events.

One feature of this new tour is their attention to quality.

The founders of the tour have noted that the venues for their tournaments will always be at courses that will test the players ability. The North Star Open (July 6-7th) will be played at Dellwood Country Club near White Bear Lake, MN.

Known traditionally as a difficult course, Dellwood has recently gone through a $8M renovation of the course and clubhouse and is truly one of the premier clubs in the Upper Midwest. The course has hazards on 15 of the 18 holes and will play between 7200-7400 yards.

Sponsored by various Minnesota businesses who all share the intent of growing the game, the North Star Tour is well funded, so it can offer larger purses while at a reasonable cost to participants. Finally, the tour has adopted “Toys for Tots” as its primary charity recipient which is co-sponsored by several of the MN golf clubs and the US Marines.
