Tom Carlson of Sioux Falls shot a blazing 6-under par 66 to seize the 1st round lead Friday in the SDGA Men’s State Stroke Play Amateur Championship at Brookings CC. Tom currently leads Matt Johnson of Sioux Falls by one stroke after Johnson fired a 67.
Carlson, a 2-time State Match Play champion (but who has never won the State Stroke Play), birdied 3 of 5 to close his first nine (started on hole 10), and then birdied 3 of 5 again to start his second nine on his way to a very impressive 7 birdie, one bogey round. Johnson birdied 4 of the first 5 holes on his second nine (also started on 10) on his way to an inward nine score of 32.
With temperatures in the low 80s and virtually zero wind, Brookings CC was there for the taking today. The greens have recovered nicely from a late spring scare, and they were rolling pretty nicely today considering the state that they were in just earlier this summer. Overall, there were 15 scores under par for the day, and 19 total at par or better. Other notable scores were last year’s runner up James Green at 69, Miles Schock of Pierre (who doesn’t have a home course to play at this summer due to the flooding!) at 69, Scott Holm of Brookings CC also at 69, Ryan Jansa at 70 and defending champion Chris Long at 71. This year’s State 2-Man and State Match Play champion Tyler Rachetto shot a 1st round 76.
Eight current South Dakota State University Jackrabbit golfers are in the field this week, as well as head coach Jared Baszler. Leading the way among the Jacks contingent was Lukas Davison at 2-under 70, with teammate Dillon Schultz one stroke behind at 71. Several notable Jacks players struggled a bit in round one, but something tells me that we’ll see some serious birdie making by the Blue + Gold over the course of the weekend.
Round 2 begins tomorrow at 7:30am on the 1st and 10th tees, with just a slight chance of isolated afternoon thunderstorms. Should be another great day at BCC. Be sure to check back again tomorrow for another update.
