The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion will be the site of the 2013 South Dakota Two-Man Championship this coming weekend, June 8th and 9th.
The tournament is traditionally a fun and competitive way to kick off the summer golf season, and is expected to be no different in 2013. A two day tournament, the competition follows a first day best ball, second day Modified Chapman format. This year will mark the 27th playing of the Two-Man team, beginning in 1987. The 2013 Two-Man has 96 team entries, including the 2012 championship team of Charlie Jacobson and Danny Amundson, both of Sioux Falls.
The two fought off a furious second day comeback from perennial contenders Chris Long and Matt Johnson in 2012 to claim their first SDGA title each. Long and Johnson are paired up once again this year, and are among the favorites to contend for the title in Vermillion. The Long/Johnson team will be a part of the marquee grouping on Saturday morning, as they share a tee-time with two time past champions (2003, 2008) Mike Brummer and Pat Lockwood. Other top finishers from a year ago that will be in the 2013 field include the teams of Joel Harrington with Troy Giegling (3rd in 2012) and Brandon Sigmund with Jeff Meyerink (7th in 2012). Ben Irlbeck and Scott Nowak will be looking to claim their first Two-Man Championship this year, after the two have paired up to claim three top-10 finishes in the past four years.
The Bluffs Golf Course is a relatively short course, playing a little shorter than 6700 yards, but offers a challenging and scenic back nine along the Missouri River Bluffs. The par-72 course offers a good mix of par 4s to go along with some shorter par 5s that the field will be looking to take advantage of.
The Two-Man is the opening of the 2013 SDGA State Tournament schedule, followed
by the Husband-Wife tournament on June 22nd and 23rd at Lakeview Golf Course in
Mitchell. 2012 Champions Brett and Jenny Coluccio will be in the field looking
to defend their title.
