Courtesy of Bovada, here is a listing of the most current betting odds for the 113th playing of the United States Open Championship. The tournament starts this coming week, June 11-16th.
Hosted at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA (outside of Philly), the U.S. Open is perenially recognized as the most difficult tournament in the world, featuring thick roughs, fast putting surfaces and tricky hole designs.
Merion hasn’t hosted a U.S. Open since 1981, but the two most famous Opens it hosted were the 1953 U.S. Open where Ben Hogan won, hitting his picturesque 1-iron into the 18th green and the 1971 U.S. Open where Lee Trevino beat Jack Nicklaus in a Monday playoff. The key between the two, they were tremendous ball strikers.
When making bets for the tournament (which as Rick Reilly tells us, BETTING IS WRONG!), take a look at the ball striking statistics and pick players with great ball striking statistics as well as a great wedge game. Also, make sure they are a great putter. Majors are won by the flatsticks.
Also, 4 of the last 6 champions have won via the recently banned usage of the anchored putting stroke. Maybe it will continue this week?
