PGA Professional Todd Kolb here with another segment of Teaching with Technology. Now one of the great things about being an instructor in this day and age is that we are able to be mobile, meaning we’re able to move around to any point in the golf course; and today is a perfect example of just that. I’ve got my mobile device here; I’ve got my Flightscope X2 Elite. Both of them have batteries that are going to last 7, 8, 9 hours, so I can be on the golf course all day long.

Now what does that mean as a golf instructor? Well, I can set up like I have here today on a hole –late afternoon, not very busy—and I can actually see what my student does on the golf course. See, on the lesson tee, on the driving range, it’s great to have information because you’re training and you’re trying to make changes. But the reality of it is that the real performance happens on the golf course, and as an instructor, I want to see what my student is doing in the arena of competition.

So on a day like today, I can come out here, I can bring a student out on a real golf hole. We have a real target, we have a real situation that they’re going to see when they go out and play on their own. Then I can actually get some information—some data—on what’s happening.

So that is one of the great things on Teaching with Technology that we can do today that we simply couldn’t do very long ago; and that is we can be mobile, we can move around the golf course, and we can see what the student is actually doing on the golf course.
