Anyone who watched the Big Break NFL: Puerto Rico semifinal saw Mallory Blackwelder as a fearsome competitor.
Mallory went head to head with a man nicknamed “Sasquatch,” Team Rice member Isaac Sanchez, for four holes of elimination golf. The contrast in styles was staggering. Isaac looms over his shots and opponents alike, sending impossibly long drives bounding down the fairways and looping wedges that never seem to come down. He’s an intimidating figure to say the least.
And yet, there was Mallory, both petite and vivacious, matching Isaac shot for shot. When he knocked a ball to five feet, she knocked one to four. When he hit a birdie putt, she answered with a birdie of her own. Although Mallory eventually succumbed to Isaac, her performance in defeat will always be a part of Big Break lore.
Luckily for us, Mallory dialed back the competitiveness to donate a few moments of her time to USGolfTV. Editor in Chief Troy Klongerbo caught up with the two time Big Break contestant at the PGA Show to discuss her experience on the show, her lack of NFL knowledge, and her future plans in the game of golf.
Mallory will continue her career on the Symetra Tour with the hope of one day playing on the LPGA Tour. She says she wouldn’t mind returning to Big Break if the powers that be allow her a third crack at it. We wouldn’t mind it either.
Follow Mallory on Twitter @MalBlackwelder to get her daily musings and opinions. Trust me, she’s as cheerful off the course as she is fiery on it 🙂
