Quick, someone tell Mark Wilson that the PGA Tour season extends beyond the first week in March! Wilson won the Humana Challenge (yep, I still think of it as the Bob Hope Classic too) on Sunday by two strokes, his third victory in the past two PGA Tour seasons and the fifth of his career. Wilson’s two victories last season came in January and February (Sony Open in Hawaii + Waste Management Open in Scottsdale), and the other two of his career came in early March. Ok, that might be random information, but it might not be. The guy simply knows how to start off the year hot.
Wilson is one of those guys that you constantly forget about, not in a bad way, but because he doesn’t do anything overly flashy. He’s a very “short” hitter by PGA Tour standards and makes up for his lack of distance by being scrappy good with his wedges and the flatstick (a match play opponent’s worst nightmare). Now with 5 PGA Tour victories, Wilson is tied on the career PGA Tour wins list with Tom Lehman and John Daly. Yep, both have won majors, but nevertheless, 5 victories is 5 victories and makes him a name that we all should be aware of on the leaderboard. Congrats to Mark, and something tells me that the January thru March won’t be his only winning window for long.
