Rory McIlroy had a 2013 he would probably rather forget, in many aspects. His golf game was a shell of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 Rory we love. Off-the-course drama caused a waive of criticism and court rooms. Rory dealt with everything from equipment changes to management changes, and was more than likely ready for new beginnings in 2014.

The change in calendar has already brought McIlroy (my dark horse pick for Player of the Year) what he called on Twitter his “first victory of 2014” as he and tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki announced their engagement. The two sent out similar tweets regarding their engagement shortly after bringing in the new year together in Sydney, Australia, where Caroline is preparing for the Australian Open.

Caroline tweeted “Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 off with a bang! … I said YES!!!!!” followed shortly after by a tweet from Rory, “Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it’s going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!”. Both tweets included a collage featuring the ring, fireworks, and a picture of the couple.

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki – called Roraline or Wozzilroy by some – began dating during the summer of 2011, having both spent time as the #1 ranked player in the world for their respective sports during that time period. Caroline enters 2014 as the 10th ranked tennis player in the world, while McIlroy has fallen to 6th in the world.

While I jokingly hope wedding planning doesn’t interfere with my dark horse pick for Player of the Year’s golf game, congratulations are certainly in store on engagement and new beginnings in 2014 for Rory and Caroline!
