Simplifying Golf With Technology (Video)

11/16/2016 At times, advanced numbers help us little. We have a tendency to focus more on the stat and move towards improving that stat when really the stat is there to help us grade our games. For example, a baseball player made aware of his batting average on balls in play would drive himself batty if he tried to maximize that number. Instead, the statistic shows how lucky or unlucky he’s been. He should still rely on the fundamentals to improve his hitting. The same is true in golf. Technology has given us a variety of ways to look...

Acushnet, Parent Company Of Titleist, Set To Go Public With IPO

10/28/2016 Golf is a tricky industry to navigate, whether you’re a player or a businessman. It’s why we scoffed when founder Bob Parsons entered the fray last winter with a new line of irons. It’s why TaylorMade, and others, have co-branded even if it brings the company away from golf. For example, hockey equipment manufacturer CCM—which, like TaylorMade until this year, falls under the Adidas umbrella—used “TaylorMade” technology on its hockey sticks. Based in Montreal, CCM also draped rally towels advertising TaylorMade’s latest driver in the “R” series over seats at the Bell Centre for Canadiens’ home games....

Game On: Who From The 2016 Ryder Cup Will Head To Paris 2018?

10/19/2016 The Americans’ victory at this year’s Ryder Cup ended an era and ushered in a new one. What will define the event going forward has yet to be determined. We might not know in two years either. What we can say is that it is unlikely that either side will dominate the Ryder Cup like the Europeans did over the last 20 years. There’s just too much talent—specifically, young talent—to go around. The Americans finally got mad enough to change their ways at Hazeltine. The result was a beat-down in Minnesota. Now the Europeans are left to reconsider...

Day’s Putting & MC Bowditch: 5 Surprising Stats From The 2016 PGA Tour Season

10/12/2016 Sometimes golf plays out exactly as it should. Other times, it’s completely random. The game is endlessly frustrating, if you haven’t noticed. For example, Jason Day enjoyed the finest putting season in history (well, since they’ve been tracking that sort of thing) and yet failed to win a major. Jordan Spieth, on the other hand, putted better this season than he did when he went 1-1-T4-2 at the majors in 2015. Some game we have. Here are five of the most surprising, telling statistics of the 2016 PGA Tour season. 1. Jason Day’s All-Time Season Let’s head to...

Presidents Cup: Steve Stricker And Nick Price Name Assistant Captains

10/06/2016 While the cheers from Hazeltine are finally wearing off—as are the beers from the celebration, but that’s a different story—that other biannual team golf event decided to make announcements for its next installment. On Wednesday, the 2017 Presidents Cup captains announced who would join their staffs for the next year’s competition. Steve Stricker tabbed Fred Couples, Tiger Woods and Davis Love III, while opposing skipper Nick Price named Ernie Els, Tony Johnstone and Geoff Ogilvy. The storylines are obvious. Love will return to international competition after guiding the Americans to their first Ryder Cup victory in eight years...

Americans Recapture Ryder Cup Behind Heroic Patrick Reed

10/3/2016 If the Grim Reaper had a forehead tanline, he might dress as Patrick Reed this Halloween. Then again, he couldn’t match the ferocity necessary for the costume. No one could. Not even Rory McIlroy on Sunday. The Americans won the Ryder Cup for the first time in eight years this weekend with a 17-11 rout of the Europeans at Hazeltine National Golf Club. All 12 members of the United States team contributed to the victory. Phil Mickelson’s task force worked. Brandt Snedeker, one of the goats from the 2012 collapse, went 3-0. Last man in Ryan Moore delivered...

Rory McIlroy Wins Tour Championship, FedExCup Playoffs

09/25/2016 Not long after Rory McIlroy closed the doors on a Tour Championship, FedExCup Playoffs win and $10 million, ESPN’s Jason Sobel recalled a conversation with the world’s best player from a year ago. “Luckily, that amount of money doesn’t mean much to me anymore,” McIlroy said in reference to that fat paycheck. It’s true that Rory has done well for himself financially, but the statement also hints at a killer drive. McIlroy needs to win like Tiger needed to win and that alone is his motivation. So when Rory dialed up a 64 on Sunday to finish at...

How To Stop Chunking Irons: Control Your Low Point (Video)

-09/21/2016 “The first concept that we have to talk about,” begins Todd Kolb, PGA Teaching Professional, “is by far the most important thing to becoming a great iron player. And that is controlling the low point.” Kolb is speaking on a course with a spackled fairway and a water hazard in the background as if to highlight the significance of iron play. Firstly, you never know what lie you’re going to get. Secondly, a poor shot can splash whenever water is present. Kolb put together a brief video with US Golf TV to educate golfers on the best way...

Video Lesson: Changing Setup With Flightscope

09/20/2016 PGA Teaching Professional and USGolfTV founder Todd Kolb runs a series called “Teaching with Technology.” Kolb, one of the most respected teaching professionals in the Upper Midwest, helps his student best utilize the tools that 21st century golf provides them. It’s a changing game and with it, comes new technologies. But if the adage, “It’s not the tools, it’s the artist who possesses them” (or your own variation of that saying) can be challenged, it’s here. Reading the numbers is one thing. Applying them is quite another. Take for example, the Flightscope. Earlier this year, Troy Klongerbo spoke to...

Ryder Cup Selections: A (Misleading) Stats-based Search For Captain’s Pick Four

09/14/2016 On Monday, Davis Love III made his initial three captain’s picks for the upcoming Ryder Cup. With the Tour Championship to play next week, Love has just one more spot to fill on an American team seeking its first victory over the Europeans since 2008. Only JB Holmes among the first three Ryder Cup selections—Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar were the other two—could be considered a surprise. Even that’s a stretch. Holmes finished 10th in the US Ryder Cup points standings, just behind Bubba Watson…who didn’t receive the nod from Love. That’s where American fans raise an eyebrow....
